Te Kōhanga Reo o Rānana

About

Te Kōhanga Reo o Rānana is a community group dedicated to giving tamariki (children) and their whānau (family) access to reo Māori (Māori language), tikanga (customs) and cultural identity in London.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Rānana is for everybody, whether you’re Māori, Pakeha, Pacifica, Kiwi, a New Zealander or are just interested in Te Ao Māori, the Māori world - nau mai, haere mai - everyone is welcome.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Rānana founded in 1997 and is part of the Ngāti Rānana whānau, our rōpu matua.

Tohu

Our Tohu (logo) speaks to our values of Kotahitanga (togetherness & unity), Whanāungatanga (kinship and connection) and Manākitanga (generosity & kindness).

After consultation with Kui Rahera Windsor and Matua Ben Ward, the logo was designed by Ben Ward. The whakamaramatanga (meaning) of the logo is as follows

  • The larger mahunga represents Io o nga Mano – The supreme atua, breathing knowledge into Tane, the smaller mahunga below.

  • The smaller mahunga represents Tane Whakapiripiri – Uniter of people – the room used by Kohanga.

  • The kowhaiwhai patterns represent Nga Hau E Wha – People from the four winds who make up the whanau of Kohanga.

  • The black around kowhaiwhai – Our dead never forgotten – a tribute to Hine-nui-te-po.

  • The three kite of knowledge placed amongst whanau – a resource of knowledge to abstract as needed, as well as a storing place.

  • The red, yellow and orange colours depict one’s enlightenment of Te Reo and knowledge of ahuatanga Maori as each person grows in their learning towards a better understanding.
